Heirloom Cloth Set

A hand towel and dishcloth set that’s essential for any kitchen, bathroom, housewarming, and even baby shower! The Heirloom Cloth Set is a modern take on a household staple. The set is knit flat in Double Moss Stitch, which gives them texture from top to bottom and side to side. Plus, they’re reversible! The pattern includes instructions to knit the set in three sizes, so you can choose from Small (dishcloth size) or Medium and Large (hand towel sizes).

Design & Inspiration

It’s been a plan of mine to design a cloth set for a while now. The idea came to me out of necessity. I keep a tiered fruit stand on my kitchen counter which I use for storing onions and garlic. Every time I go to grab one, a layer of skin falls through the bottom of the stand and makes a mess on my counter. I’m constantly cleaning it out!

So, I figured I’d make some sort of cloth or scarf to drape on the bottom of the tiers, which would hopefully avoid a messy countertop. Plus, it would add a bit of decor to an otherwise mundane kitchen storage item.

I chose the Double Moss Stitch pattern because I wanted something reversible and easy to knit. And we all know how much I love the moss/seed stitch family.

My fruit stand has two tiers in differing sizes, so I designed the medium and large sizes to fit each tier so that they’d drape over the lip. Kind of like a French bread basket with a linen or cotton liner. The smaller size came about because I wanted to use it as a pot holder.

Yarn Choice

Keeping the French bread basket in mind, I chose to use cotton yarn for the Heirloom Cloth Set design. Being that it’s essentially a kitchen or even bathroom item, cotton is definitely the best choice. So of course, I went with my all-time favorite, Lion Brand’s 24/7 Cotton. The colors I chose were Goldenrod, Ecru and Mint, which complement each other so well and look great in my kitchen.

Notes: The Heirloom Cloth Set consists of a set of three textured cloths in sizes Small, Medium and Large. Each one is knit flat in a four row repeat that will make the Double Moss Stitch pattern.

Follow the pattern instructions for the size you want, being careful of the stitch and row counts as the number of stitches and rows will vary depending on the size. Refer to the Finished Sizes section on page 1, but for reference, the Small size measures more like a dishcloth, and the Medium and Large measure more like hand towels. The sizes are written as Small (Medium, Large).

To make your cloth longer or shorter, work rows 1-4 until your desired measurement.

Cast on and bind off using your methods of choice. Some of my testers chose to use an i-cord bind off and work an i-cord to make a loop so that they could hang their cloths.
