Design & Inspiration
Have you ever noticed that there are more crochet bag patterns than knit? I even have a crochet pattern, the Tranquility Tote. But I’ve been meaning to design a knit bag for a while now. So I did some research on Pinterest, looking at different bag dimensions and styles. The more I searched the more I found I kept gravitating to the same collegiate, dark academia style of satchels and saddle bags.
From there the Oxford Satchel took shape. I chose to make the body Stockinette with a Check Stitch front flap for added texture. The I-cord edges, including cast on and bind off were for sturdiness. And the rounded flap decreases for that saddle bag style. I decided to include two sides to match the front flap to make the satchel extra roomy. And of course what’s a better way to make an extra long strap than with an I cord?
Yarn Choice
I used Originally Lovely’s Pima Cotton in Fawn for the body and strap, and Fern for the front flap and sides. This yarn is so lovely and drapey, I really like how it stretches with ease to allow the bag it’s extra roominess. The fibers also have a nice shine to them that gives the satchel a little pop of color and texture.
Skill Level
The Oxford Satchel is an advanced beginner knit pattern. Skills needed are to be able to make an I-cord and work an I-cord tab cast on and bind off. Also, slipping stitches purl-wise for the I-cord edges. All of which are definitely do-able for an advanced beginner knitter.
