The Fleur Shawl

A floral lace, colorblock, asymmetrical shawl that’s a dream to wear. The Fleur Shawl was designed in collaboration with Sewrella Yarn. It takes about 20 mini skeins or 1,120 yards of sock weight yarn and US 5 / 3.75mm circular needles with a 64” cord.

Design & Inspiration

I had the most amazing opportunity to design the Fleur Shawl for Sewrella Yarn’s Spring Lookbook. Honestly, it was a dream come true to design a knit pattern for my favorite yarn dyer. It was such an enjoyable experience to work with the yarn fairies and develop a design for Spring. And to be able to work with Sewrella’s beautiful yarn was an honor.

When I first reached out to Sewrella Yarn, I had pitched an idea for a shawl design using their ever-popular Classic Sock Yarn. I had just released the Saybrook Shawl pattern, which I used Classic Sock Yarn for, and so was inspired to design another shawl. But this time, I wanted my next shawl to be more of an asymmetrical triangle. The Saybrook Shawl is more of a boomerang shape. Find the blog post for the Saybrook Shawl here to learn more.

When Sewrella’s yarn coordinator responded, saying they’d be delighted to collaborate, my heart soared!

Yarn Choice

I quickly set to work, using some scrap mini skeins of Sewrella Yarn to design a Spring-themed shawl. I knew right away that I wanted something feminine, floral, and colorful–all things that instantly come to mind when thinking about Spring. I love how delicate and pretty the florette lace stitch looks on fingering weight yarn, and decided to scatter the little florettes throughout the shawl.

And once I received the mini skein sets from Sewrella Yarn, I played around with different color combinations. Of course I was going to use every single color, but the question was, in which sequence? At first I thought about doing a fade, which could easily be done with such pretty minis. But, after arranging the minis in different combinations, I found that I kept coming back to the same one. I really love how the lighter blue is offset by the deeper cranberry and terracotta colors, and how the terracotta fades to the lighter peach to white and then pivots to the deeper blue. See the arrangement I chose in the photograph below.

Skill Level

This is an intermediate level knit pattern since it involves working with fingering weight yarn and a lace floral detail.
