Little Bean Hat

A little beanie hat for that sweet baby sprout in your life. The Little Bean Hat is a beginner pattern that’s knit with mini skeins of fingering weight yarn. A single mini skein makes one newborn hat, but you can choose to pair multiple minis for striped or contrasting brim versions. With a 2×2 ribbed brim and stockinette stitch, the Little Bean Hat works up quickly, so you can make plenty for your little newborn. Welcome to the world, little bean!

Design & Inspiration

I wanted to knit a baby hat for my newborn son for when he came home from the hospital, and since he was born in the Spring, I wanted something light weight. So, naturally I took to Ravelry to search for baby hat patterns that use fingering weight yarn. Bonus if any used mini skeins since I preferred to not have to use a full skein for such a tiny thing.

To my surprise, however, there really weren’t many fingering weight baby hat patterns, let alone any with mini skeins. Sooo… I decided to design my own.

When thinking in terms of hat construction, I aimed for a more classic-looking baby hat, which is why I chose a basic 2×2 ribbed brim and stockinette stitch body. When I think of baby knits, I think of quick and cute, but also practical and essential. The Little Bean Hat hits all the marks!

Yarn Choice

Since I had some leftover mini skeins from Sewrella Yarn’s Spring Tonals in my stash, I decided to use those. You may recognize them from The Fleur Shawl that I designed for Sewrella Yarn last Spring. They’re some of my favorites, so I wanted to use them for my little guy’s hat.

I knit the striped version first, pairing Toile and Normandy. And then knit the second in Jardin and Au Lait. I love being able to mix and match the minis to make different versions of the Little Bean Hat. It’s so fun to play with different colors, especially for baby knits.

Skill Level

The Little Bean Hat is beginner friendly. Skills you’ll need to know are how to knit in the round with circular or double-pointed needles, knit and purl and knit 2 together decreases…all the hat knitting basics!
