Design & Inspiration
It took me what feels like forever to decide on a name for this blanket. I toyed around with soooo many names, but kept coming back to the word ‘cozy’ every time I thought about it. Probably because it IS cozy. This blanket is great for having around the house, especially now that we’re approaching winter. And speaking of winter, it would make a great holiday gift *wink wink*. I’m picturing a Christmas-y combo of red, white, and green. Or maybe shades of blues and white for Hanukkah.
The blanket was designed as a colorblock, which means that there are three panels or “blocks” of solid colors. All three blocks are equally sized and use the same amount of worsted weight yarn. Mine is a baby blanket that I made for my friends’ newborn, but I would love to make a throw for my living room. Definitely adding to my project list for 2021! Which is why I wrote the pattern in various blanket sizes. Why write a blanket pattern in one size, when it could be available in 12, am I right?!?! Scroll down to the pattern to find the size chart for all 12 blanket measurements and yardage for each.
Also, it’s knit entirely in Irish Moss Stitch, which is simply knit 1, purl 1… for two rows, then purl 1, knit 1… for two rows. Repeat that over and over and you’re golden. I personally love the Irish Moss Stitch because of its even texture and squishy feel. Plus it’s reversible! Don’t you just hate when you’re hastily throwing a blanket over your freezing cold legs only to discover that it’s completely upside down? I sure do! But with the Cozy Colorblock Blanket, both sides are up…or down for that matter.
Yarn Choice
Since I was making this blanket for a baby, I chose Caron Simply Soft from Yarnspirations. The yarn is a versatile worsted weight that has a lustrous, fashionable sheen that’s great for home decor as well as a soft, touchable feel that’s perfect for delicate newborn skin. Or for snuggling by the fire! Plus, the 100% acrylic fibers are conveniently machine washable and dryable.
I used Gray Heather, White, and Woodland Heather, and am just loving how that woodsy green pops against the white. Seriously, I’m just a click away from purchasing all the Woodland Heather available and knit all the things because I’m so here for it. Check out all the Caron Simply Soft colorways here.
Skill Level
This blanket is beginner-friendly. It’s worked flat, starting with the Long-tail cast on and worked in repeating rows of Irish Moss Stitch. If you know how to knit and purl, then you can definitely make this blanket. Check out my video tutorial on how to knit the Irish Moss Stitch.
