The At Home Crochet Throw is the perfect project if you’re looking for something to do while staying safe at home. It’s very beginner friendly but great for advanced crocheters as well in that it doesn’t require much concentration, but is still satisfying to make. And not to mention cozy!
Design & Inspiration
It’s very important to keep our creative minds working, especially these days since we’re stuck at home, trying to keep ourselves and our families healthy. I started designing the pattern during my maternity leave while I was at home caring for my newborn. My son was born right smack in the middle of the holiday season, so we couldn’t go anywhere because it wasn’t safe for him. Going to the mall or those larger department stores was out of the question because he hadn’t gotten any vaccines yet. It was hard because all I wanted to do was get out of the house and shop. I definitely experienced some serious Target withdrawals.
But whenever in doubt, I always tap into my creative side. And that’s when the At Home Crochet Throw was born. When I started this project, I knew right off the bat that I needed something simple and with minimal effort for those odd hours of the night when I couldn’t fall back to sleep after a feeding.
That’s what I love about this throw! You can literally put it down in the middle of working a row to do whatever it is that needs your attention at a given moment–soothing a crying baby, spraying Lysol on your Amazon delivery, washing your hands for the 74th time that day because you’re afraid they still aren’t clean enough–and pick it up right where you left off without having to spend ten minutes figuring out what you did before the Uber Eats driver dropped your lunch on the porch and fled.
Yarn Choice
Lion Brand’s Touch of Alpaca is one of my favorite worsted weight yarns. It’s very soft and has a lot of give, making it super easy to work with. The natural fiber gives it that high-end luxury wool look, but still durable for everyday use.
I decided on a bare neutral color combo for my throw as sort of an ode to my maternity leave. The series of blues and pink offset by the grey and cream tones remind me of the many baby gift bags, clothes, ribbons, bibs and other baby items that typically have one or more of these color schemes.
My hope for you is that making this throw will give you peace of mind and a sense of normalcy during this difficult time.
Stay safe and healthy my maker friends!
