Design & Inspiration

This one has been on my list to make for a while now. I love wearing knotted headbands, and thought it would be fun to design my own. It’s a very basic, beginner-friendly knit that makes a great accessory to any outfit for any hairstyle.

I have to say, I love making these cutesy little hair accessories. If you recall last summer, I designed bow hair ties that are just adorable, if I could toot my own horn for a sec. Check out the pattern for the Summer Throwback Crochet Bow Ties, it’s free on the blog! And yes, I know I’m plugging a crochet pattern on a knit post, but hey, they’re just too cute to pass up. Plus, I sell them in my Etsy shop, handmade by me. So if you don’t crochet but still want some of your own, you can purchase a set here. Check back regularly for new editions.

Yarn Choice

I said this in my very first blog post, and I’ll say it again! Lion Brand’s Touch of Alpaca is one of my favorite worsted weight yarns. And I’ll go a step further to say that it doesn’t get as much love as it deserves.

It’s 90% acrylic, 10% alpaca, and is the perfect combination of low maintenance durability and high quality natural fiber. It’s luxury meets everyday affordable! What’s not to love?

The soft, silky feel and stretchy durability are what drove me to use it for the Basic Knot Headband. Plus, many of the colorways are neutral tones, which work well for an everyday accessory.

Ok plugging another crochet pattern, but if you’re curious what my first post was, you can check out the At Home Crochet Throw. Sorry, I don’t sell handmade throws in my Etsy shop (maybe one day?), but you can at least get an idea for some of the colorways available from what I used for my design.

Skill Level

A very beginner-level, basic knit pattern. All you need to know how to do it cast on, knit and bind off. I’ve included easy-to-follow tutorials on how to knit smooth, even edges and tie the knot.

Essentially, what you’ll do is knit a long, thin, flat rectangle of approximately 21″ long (can be longer or shorter depending on your preference). Then, you’ll make a knot by tying both ends together (I have video and photo tutorials on this). And then wear it with all your favorite outfits!

Honestly, it makes a great summer craft for kids as well as adults.

Step 6: Go back and sew through a few more times to secure in place. Weave in remaining ends.
