Design & Inspiration

I love wearing knotted headbands, and have been thinking of designing my own for quite some time now. After I made the knit version, I decided to try out how a crocheted band would look. Well, I must say, for a basic, beginner-friendly design, it makes a great accessory to any outfit for any hairstyle.

I’m thinking of making a hair accessory design a yearly thing because I’ve really enjoyed them so far. You may recall last summer, I released the Summer Throwback Crochet Bow Ties pattern, little bow hair things. It’s free on the blog if you’re interested. I also sell them in my Etsy shop, handmade by me. So if you don’t want to crochet your own, you can purchase a set here. Check back regularly for new editions.

Yarn Choice

I keep saying this, but it’s so true! Lion Brand’s Touch of Alpaca is one of my favorite worsted weight yarns.  It doesn’t seem to get as much of the love it deserves however, and not really sure why that is.

What’s not to love? It’s 90% acrylic, 10% alpaca, and is the perfect combination of low maintenance durability and high quality natural fiber. It’s luxury meets everyday affordable!

The soft, silky feel and stretchy durability are what drove me to use it for the Basic Knot Headband. Plus, many of the colorways are neutral tones, which work well for an everyday accessory.

Ok plugging another crochet pattern, but if you’re curious what else I used Touch of Alpaca for, check out my At Home Crochet Throw pattern. Sorry, I don’t sell handmade throws in my Etsy shop (maybe one day?), but you can at least get an idea for some of the colorways available from what I used for my design.

Skill Level

A very beginner-level, basic crochet pattern. All you need to know how to do is single crochet and chain. I’ve included easy-to-follow tutorials on how to crochet smooth, even edges and tie the knot.

Essentially, what you’ll do is crochet a long, thin, flat rectangle of approximately 25″ long (can be longer or shorter depending on your preference). Then, you’ll make a knot by tying both ends together (I have video and photo tutorials on this). And then wear it with all your favorite outfits!

Honestly, it makes a great summer craft for kids as well as adults.

Notes: Headband is worked flat in repeating rows of single crochet. Chain counts as the first stitch. Starting in row 2, single crochet into first stitch. Follow the photo tutorial in the pattern, and/or watch the video tutorial for steps on crocheting smooth, even edges. Headband measures approximately 25″ long when flat. To make longer or shorter, increase or decrease the number of rows as desired. Use a tapestry needle to weave in the ends and sew the knot. Refer to the video tutorial and/or follow the photo tutorial in the pattern for steps on how to sew the knot.

Ch 10 sts.

Row 1 (RS): Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sc to end of row. Ch 1 & turn. (10 sts with ch)

Row 2: Sc in 1st st to end of row. Ch 1 & turn. (10 sts with ch)

Rows 3 – 122: Rep row 2. (10 sts with ch)

Secure and leave a long tail (approx. 10″-12″) to sew the knot.

Crocheting Even Edges

Step 1: As indicated in row 1, sc into the 1st st of every row. Ch counts as a st, but do not skip the 1st st.

Step 2: Sc remaining sts.

Sewing the Knot

Step 1: With the RS facing upwards, take both ends of the work and crisscross as if to tie a shoelace.

Step 2: Tuck one end under where both crisscross and meet the two ends together.

Step 3: Align the ends so that the stitches on both edges match.

Step 4: Place a stitch marker to hold the ends in place if needed.

Step 5: With a tapestry needle and long tail, sew into each stitch on both edges.

Step 6: Go back and sew through a few more times to secure in place. Weave in remaining ends.
